Yesterday was the official opening of the new high performance centre in West Ham, East London - Foundry: east
Over 100 people turned up to the event including Olympic gold medalist Christine Ohuruogu. The Foundry have a very strong team of trainers who are industry experts and passionate about what they do. Many of them are also world class athletes in their own right.
Already there are plans for expansion with a possible mezzanine floor being added to create sufficient space for an athletic testing area with a set up including light gates, force mats and other valuable items for scientifically tracking results and progress.
There is no doubt about it, the centre is one of the best of its kind in the country However, it is not just for the elite and The Foundry have mentioned this from the start. There are planned youth weightlifting activities for the borough of Newham and also regular classes working interval, modified strongman training and general circuits aimed at the public and monthly members. It really is a one stop shop for health, fitness and performance whether you are an Olympic athlete on a periodised program and looking to add 0.5%, or Mary from the local dry cleaners that has also wanted to live a more active life, but did not know where to start or who to ask.
Having lived in Newham for 36 years - and eventually escaped - I can tell you without reservation that you will not find a gym close to this quality for many, many miles. You have a selection of leisure centres that pale into insignificance with run-of-the-mill cardio dinosaurs lining the walls and televisions ensuring we all maintain neutral while jogging - clever idea that!
